Cubmaster's Minutes: Girls?! A Free Compass?!

posted Aug 17, 2018, 11:33 AM by boyscoutsofamerica cubscoutpack71

Hello Pack 71!
It has recently been decided that our Pack will be accepting female Cub Scouts to join our ranks this fall. Does this mean that our program is changing? No! We are still planning on doing all the fun activities that we have planned on our calendar. If you have a daughter that wants to join, now is a great time to do it! Being part of the first year of girl Cub Scouts in America will definitely be something to remember.
Our summer is drawing to a close, and that means its time to start having meetings and adventures again! We are kicking off the 2018-2019 year with a Pack Picnic at Macungie Memorial Park on September 5th and anyone interested in joining the Pack is more than welcome to attend. We will also be recruiting at the Open Houses for Shoemaker and Macungie Elementary Schools, so look for us there handing out flyers. All scouts who join the Pack in August or September get a free compass!

Cubmaster Nick

Cubmaster's Minutes: Summer Camp and Getting Ready for Fall

posted Jul 24, 2018, 6:10 PM by boyscoutsofamerica cubscoutpack71

Hello Pack 71!
I hope that everyone has been enjoying their summer and getting ready for another great year of Scouting! We just finished Resident Camp at Akelaland last week and if you didn't go, you missed out on a fun week of hiking, boating, shooting, silly games and songs, and so much more. This was my first year attending Cub Scout camp with my son Oliver who will be a Tiger in the fall, and we had a blast!
Pack 71 still has more fun activities planned this month and next so that we can earn the Summertime Pack award, so keep an eye on our Calendar. We also are gearing up for some recruiting once school starts, but if you want to join sooner, you don't have to wait! We accept applications year round, and we are always looking for more adult leaders to help out. Please see our contact page for information on how to get a hold of us.
Yours in Scouting,
Cubmaster Nick

Cubmaster's Minutes: Summer is here!

posted Jun 8, 2018, 7:27 AM by boyscoutsofamerica cubscoutpack71

Hello Pack 71!
Our Pack picnic on June 6th was a blast! Things can get wild and crazy when trying to keep 30-40 Cub Scouts (and parents) actively engaged but I think we did a pretty good job. We started off with a tale of how Akela found his tribe and all the different Dens came together. Then we promoted all of our Scouts to the next rank one Den at a time, which involved their parents removing their old neckerchiefs and presenting them with new ones. Our Den Chiefs assisted with face paint for the boys which showed off the ranks they have earned which the boys enjoy showing off year after year. Then we had hot dogs thanks to some help from the Troop and played Tug of War and Kickball.
We also had some new faces show up as a result of our recruiting at the Open Houses at the schools, and we look forward to more people joining us at our next big event - our end-of-summer picnic on August 29th. A reminder to anyone who is considering joining our Pack: you can join us at any time throughout the year, you don't have to wait until specific signup dates to apply. We pro-rate our dues and we have activities year round, despite taking a short break from weekly meetings during the summer. If you have any questions please contact the Pack email.
We are all looking forward to Day Camp at the end of this month and Resident Camp in July! And we can't wait to meet all the new Scouts that will join us when school starts up again!
Yours in Scouting,
Cubmaster Nick

Cubmaster's Minutes: Wrapping up the 2017-2018 year

posted Apr 30, 2018, 11:29 AM by boyscoutsofamerica cubscoutpack71

Hello Pack 71!
Our website has not gotten much love recently, and I aim to change that. I am the new Cubmaster, Nick Huber. My goal is to update this at least once a month so that when parents of prospective scouts view our site for the first time, they aren't seeing news that's months or even years old. The boys of Pack 71 are actively engaged in Scouting almost every week during the school year, whether it's Den Meetings, Pack Meetings, volunteer activities, camping, and more! At our Pack Meeting in April, we played a game that was designed by our Webelos, had a uniform inspection, and also tie-dyed shirts and bandannas that we plan on wearing to Summer Camp.
We have just over a month until we have our end of year Pack Picnic on June 6th at Macungie Park. This next month will see our Dens trying to finish as much as they can before the boys advance to the next Den. Additionally, we will be recruiting at Shoemaker and Macungie Elementary Schools in an effort to expand our ranks. If you have a child that will be in Kindergarten thru 5th Grade this Fall, please contact our Pack and we will get back to you in a timely manner. Please check our Calendar for all of our upcoming meetings and activities!
Yours in Scouting,
Cubmaster Nick

Scout Sunday

On February 12, 2017 Cub Scout Pack 71 and Boy Scout Troop 71 came together at Solomon's United Church of Christ to worship the Lord and to say 'Thank You' to Solomon's for their continuous commitment to both the Pack and the Troop.  Solomon's United Church of Christ has chartered both groups for over 80 years.  Scout Sunday is one of many ways the boys come together to say thank you to Solomon's United Church of Christ.

A Psalm for Scouts and Scouters

The Lord God is our Great Scoutmaster who provides all our needs.  He lets us camp in forests tall and meadows green.  He leads us on trails besides waters deep and still, brooks babbling, streams rushing, and rivers raging.  He restores our bodies, minds and souls, even as we observe the eagle soaring to greater heights above.  He encourages the Eagle Scout in his upward climb.  He teaches Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers to live the Scout Oath and Law.  Even though the trails may lead through dark valleys with towering mountains we are courageous because he leads us onward.  He continually blesses us with food for mind and body.  Even when our enemies dislike or distrust us, he blesses us with the gifts of love and forgiveness.  Surely, his goodness and mercy will sustain us all the days of our lives.  And, when we climb the final trail through the awesome pass that leads to the Great Council fire, we shall join those who traveled the trail before us and joyfully live with him forever!
